Watching the Stanley Cup last night and how gut wrenching that was for Bruins fans, it got me thinking about sports fans, and their toughest defeat.
We all know that fans take losses a lot harder than the players do.
As a sports fan, what was the toughest loss you've dealt with?

I've had a couple.
Orioles-Yankees, the Jeffrey Maier game. I was 7, first time I swore outloud and my dad simply understood. I still hate that bastard.
Knicks-Rockets, '94 Finals Game 6 and 7 - my favorite player John Starks has had better moments
Knicks-Pacers, Reggie scores 8 points in 9 seconds. My all-time least favorite athlete.
Orioles-Yankees, ALDS this year. Raul Ibanez hits game-tying pinch-hit homer in the 9th then wins it in extras.

Those are very good. I am not going to lie, I laughed on a couple of those.
As for mine, I would have to say the worst one for me was the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Championship game. Miami University and Boston University.
Miami is up 3-1, only to have BU score 2 goals, in the last minute, to tie it up. Then, eventually win in overtime. I was devastated. The only time I have ever had tears in my eyes for a sporting event.

One being the Reds losing game three to the Giants in the 2012 NLDS after throwing a 3 hit game. Another being the game Travis Wood nearly throwing a perfect against the Phillies' Roy Halladay and losing in extra innings back in 2010. I know that one didn't have playoff implications but still made me . I will think of more...

Another tough loss (not as tough as I love the Broncos) for me was the Bengals/Broncos opening game. My wife and I left just after the kickoff and as soon as we walked outside the stadium, we heard the crowd just losing it as Brandon Stokely was taking it into the endzone...couldnt believe it

UC losing to St. Louis in the conference USA tourney after Kenyon Martin breaking his leg. Thus crapping on their NC chances.

That was going to be another one of my tough defeats. That UC team had a great chance to win it all

December 24th 2006. Bengals Broncos in the snow. I was 16 years old, just getting back from Xmas mass to witness Carson Palmer lead a beautiful 90 something yard drive ending in a TJ touchdown to put us down 1. Then the botched snap on the extra point costs the Bengals the game. That would have clinched the playoffs for Cincy. Still had one more chance in week 17 at home against Pittsburgh. They needed a win, a Kansas City win, and a Denver loss in the final week to make it. The Bengals lost in overtime as big Ben threw a 70 yd touchdown pass..... and of course Kansas City won, and Denver loss which means we would have been in with a win.... The life of a Bengals fan

Also, the previous season when Carson Palmer went down in the playoffs was about a devastating play as there ever has been in Cincy. No doubt in my mind the Bengals have at least one Super Bowl by now if that doesn't happen, and we're looking at Carson Palmer as one of the all time greats to ever play this game

This song shortly came out after that season, and became my favorite song at the time.... (Tiffany Volkerding makes an appearance around 3:07) www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsmGGnxHJmI

That was a game that we still could have won. Even with Jon Kitna. It sucked because the Steelers made adjustments in the 2nd half and the Bengals didn't.
The life of a Bengals fan easilly produced a lot of gut wrenching losses.
I do remember the 89 Super Bowl with the Bengals and 49ers. I was 6 years old, watching the game with my family in my grandparents basement. I will never forget us losing that game. I know everyone else is too young for that but as a young kid, it really sucked and made me hate the 49ers for the longest time!
